Our Practical Arc Welding Training course teaches learners the essential skills needed to weld safely and effectively using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. Training covers electrode selection, correct machine setup, arc control, welding techniques, and producing strong, quality welds on steel and metal structures.
The course combines theory with hands-on practical training, making it suitable for beginners as well as individuals looking to develop their existing welding skills.
Theory Training – 20%: The theory component provides learners with a strong foundation in Arc Welding through structured lessons, discussions, and classroom activities. Training covers the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process, welding safety, equipment, welding currents, electrode selection, materials, welding techniques, and correct operating procedures.
Practical Training – 80%: The practical component provides hands-on workshop experience where learners apply their theoretical knowledge under professional supervision. Learners practise setting up welding equipment, selecting suitable electrodes, preparing materials, controlling the welding arc, and producing quality welds across different positions and joint configurations.
Competency Assessment: Learners undergo a competency assessment conducted by qualified assessors and moderators. The assessment evaluates their theoretical knowledge, practical welding skills, safety awareness, equipment handling, and ability to complete Arc Welding tasks safely and competently.
Introduction to Arc Welding: Understanding Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), how the process works, the differences between Stick, MIG, TIG, and Flux-Cored welding, and the use of AC and DC welding current.
Welding Safety: Correct use of PPE, safe handling and operation of welding equipment, fire prevention, electrical safety, workshop procedures, and protection against burns and other workplace hazards.
Welding Machine Setup: Correct use of the electrode holder and grounding clamp, setting the appropriate amperage, safe arc-starting techniques, and adjusting current according to the electrode and material being welded.
Electrode Selection & Materials: Understanding common electrodes such as E6010, E6013, and E7018, selecting suitable electrodes for different base metals, and understanding welding polarity including DCEP, DCEN, and AC.
Practical Welding Skills: Hands-on practice across different welding positions, including Flat (1G), Horizontal (2G), Vertical (3G), and Overhead (4G), allowing learners to develop control and consistency.
Weld Types & Joints: Training covers common welding joints including Butt Joints, Fillet Welds, Lap Joints, and T-Joints, as well as an introduction to basic pipe welding techniques.
Weld Defects & Quality Control: Learners are taught to identify common welding defects such as cracking, porosity, contamination, and overheating, as well as methods for preventing and correcting faults. Training also introduces visual weld inspection and basic quality requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
