Our Welding Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively perform welding operations in professional workshop, fabrication, construction, and industrial environments. The training covers essential welding principles, welding equipment and setup, welding processes, electrode and consumable selection, material and joint preparation, welding positions, arc control, heat management, weld penetration, welding techniques, weld defects, weld inspection, equipment maintenance, and workplace safety procedures. Learners are guided on how to select suitable welding processes and consumables, prepare materials correctly, and produce quality welds while following manufacturer specifications, recognised welding practices, and workplace safety standards. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as construction, manufacturing, fabrication, engineering, mining, automotive, infrastructure development, industrial maintenance, metalworking, and general welding operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers general welding fundamentals, welding processes, equipment and machine setup, electrode and consumable selection, current and polarity, material and joint preparation, welding positions, arc control, heat management, weld penetration, welding defects, weld inspection, PPE, and workplace safety.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in setting up welding equipment, selecting and handling consumables, preparing materials and joints, striking and controlling the arc, adjusting welding parameters, controlling travel speed and electrode angle, producing consistent weld beads, and welding different materials, joint types, and positions.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, equipment setup, material preparation, welding technique, weld quality, safety awareness, and ability to perform welding operations safely and effectively.
Introduction to Welding: Learn the fundamentals of welding, common welding processes and applications, welding terminology, material types, and factors that influence weld quality.
Welding Safety & PPE: Learn essential safety requirements, including PPE, welding fumes, ventilation, electrical safety, fire prevention, hot work procedures, gas cylinder safety, and safe workshop practices.
Welding Equipment & Setup: Learn about common welding machines, electrode holders, torches, cables, earth clamps, regulators, gas cylinders, and related equipment. Training covers machine setup, current selection, polarity, and safe equipment operation.
Electrodes & Consumables: Learn about different electrodes, filler materials, welding wires, shielding gases, and consumables, including correct selection, handling, storage, and application.
Material & Joint Preparation: Learn how to measure, mark, cut, clean, grind, bevel, align, and prepare materials and joints before welding to achieve proper fit-up and weld penetration.
Welding Techniques: Develop knowledge of arc striking, arc control, electrode or torch angle, travel speed, filler material application, heat control, weld penetration, and bead formation for consistent weld quality.
Welding Processes: Gain an understanding of commonly used welding processes such as MIG, TIG, and Stick (SMAW) welding, including their applications, equipment requirements, and basic operating principles.
Welding Positions & Joint Types: Learn techniques for welding common configurations, including butt joints, lap joints, corner joints, and T-joints, in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Welding Defects & Quality Inspection: Learn to identify common defects such as porosity, cracking, undercut, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, slag inclusion, excessive spatter, and distortion, including their causes, prevention, and basic visual inspection.
Post-Welding Procedures: Learn appropriate slag removal, weld cleaning, finishing, visual inspection, equipment shutdown, consumable storage, and basic welding equipment maintenance.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
