Our Flux Core Welding Training course is designed to equip learners with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively perform flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) in professional work environments. The training covers welding equipment and machine setup, flux-cored wire selection, welding parameters, metal preparation, welding positions, joint types, welding techniques, safety procedures, weld defects, inspection, and quality control. Learners are guided on how to operate welding equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, workplace safety requirements, and recognised welding practices. The course combines classroom knowledge with practical hands-on training to help learners develop the confidence and competence required to perform flux core welding in industries such as construction, mining, manufacturing, fabrication, engineering, shipbuilding, structural steelwork, industrial maintenance, and infrastructure development.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) principles, welding equipment, machine setup, flux-cored wire selection, welding parameters, metal identification and preparation, welding positions, joint types, welding safety, PPE, weld defects, inspection, and quality standards.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on workshop experience in setting up and operating flux core welding equipment, adjusting wire feed and welding settings, preparing metal surfaces, controlling the welding arc, welding different joint types and positions, removing slag, identifying welding defects, and producing quality welds under professional supervision.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical welding ability, safety procedures, equipment handling, and overall weld quality.
Introduction to Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW): Understand the fundamentals of flux core welding, including FCAW-S (self-shielded) and FCAW-G (gas-shielded), their applications, advantages, and common industry uses.
Welding Safety & PPE: Learn safe welding practices, required PPE, machine safety, welding hazards, fume exposure awareness, workshop rules, and methods for reducing workplace risks.
Welding Equipment & Machine Setup: Learn about power sources, consumables, wire feeders, flux-cored wire selection, voltage and amperage settings, wire-feed speed, and shielding gas setup for FCAW-G welding.
Joint Types & Welding Positions: Understand fillet and groove welds, welding positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead, and the importance of correct weld penetration.
FCAW Welding Techniques: Learn push and pull techniques, travel speed control, arc control, spatter reduction, slag management, and techniques for producing smooth, strong, and consistent weld beads.
Practical Welding Exercises: Develop hands-on skills through bead-on-plate exercises, T-joints, butt joints, multi-pass welding, welding thick and thin materials, and structural welding applications.
Welding Defects & Quality Inspection: Learn to identify common welding defects such as porosity, slag inclusion, undercut, and burn-through. Training covers their causes, prevention methods, weld quality requirements, and visual inspection techniques.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
