Our Drill Rig Operator Training Course provides learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively operate drilling equipment in demanding work environments. Training covers drill rig components and controls, pre- and post-operation inspections, drilling procedures, ground and site conditions, equipment safety, drilling techniques, basic maintenance, hazard identification, and emergency procedures. Learners develop practical experience in operating drilling equipment under professional supervision while following manufacturer guidelines and workplace safety requirements. The course provides a strong foundation for work in mining, construction, quarrying, geotechnical drilling, exploration, civil engineering, and related drilling operations.
Theory Training – 20%: The theory component covers drill rig functions and components, machine controls, drilling principles, workplace safety, PPE, pre-operation inspections, ground and site conditions, drilling procedures, hazard identification, emergency response, and manufacturer operating requirements.
Practical Training – 80%: The practical component provides hands-on experience operating a drill rig under professional supervision. Learners practise machine setup, pre-start inspections, safe positioning, drilling procedures, operating controls, monitoring drilling conditions, basic equipment care, and correct shutdown procedures.
Competency Assessment: Learners undergo a competency assessment conducted by qualified assessors and moderators. The assessment evaluates their theoretical knowledge, practical operating ability, safety awareness, equipment handling, and ability to operate the drill rig safely and competently.
Machine Orientation: Understanding what a drill rig is, its functions and applications, different types of drill rigs, major components and their functions, safety features, warning systems, operating capacities, machine indicators, and appropriate corrective actions according to manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Training covers checking fluid levels, tyres, brakes, hydraulic systems, and the overall condition of the drill rig. Learners are taught to identify and report faults, understand the manufacturer’s manual, and complete required pre-start inspections before operating the equipment.
Safe Operating Procedures: Developing safe operating practices, including correct PPE use, site safety, hazard identification and risk awareness, confined-space precautions, emergency procedures, and basic first-aid requirements.
Operating Procedures: Learners develop practical skills in using drill rig control systems and hydraulics, positioning and aligning the machine correctly, preparing to drill, drilling holes safely, selecting suitable drilling patterns, and considering ground conditions during drilling operations.
Post-Operation Procedures: Training includes correct shutdown procedures, cleaning and securing the drill rig, carrying out post-operation checks, reporting faults or maintenance requirements, and completing required workplace logs, inspection records, and documentation.
