The course combines classroom knowledge with hands-on practical training to help learners develop the confidence and competence required to operate a front end loader in industries such as mining, construction, quarrying, earthmoving, civil engineering, road construction, agriculture, infrastructure development, and plant hire.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers front end loader fundamentals, machine components and controls, manufacturer specifications, pre-start inspections, hydraulic systems, bucket capacities, load stability, workplace safety, PPE, hazard identification, site preparation, operating procedures, and emergency response.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in starting and stopping the loader, steering and manoeuvring, operating the bucket, scooping and loading materials, transporting and dumping loads, stockpiling, levelling, working on different terrain, safe positioning, and operating around other workers and equipment.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical machine operation, material handling, safety awareness, and ability to operate the front end loader safely and competently.
Machine Orientation: Learn what a front end loader is, its functions, and how it is used for earthmoving activities such as loading, transporting, stockpiling, levelling, and material handling. Training covers the main components and their functions, safety features, warning systems, maximum operating capacities, machine indicators, and corrective actions according to manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to conduct a thorough pre-start inspection, including checking tyre pressure, fluid levels, brakes, bucket, lift arms, safety systems, hydraulics, and the overall condition of the machine. Learners are trained to identify and report faults, follow the manufacturer’s manual, and park the front end loader according to manufacturer and worksite requirements.
Site Preparation & Work Planning: Learn how to assess and prepare the worksite before operating the front end loader. Training covers planning the sequence of activities, selecting required attachments, identifying PPE and safety signs, assessing ground conditions, and preparing the site according to operational requirements.
Safe Operation Procedures: Develop safe operating practices covering PPE, workplace safety regulations, hazard awareness, load limits, machine stability, confined-space awareness, emergency procedures, and safe operation on uneven terrain and in different weather conditions. Learners also learn how to identify machine warnings and take appropriate corrective action to reduce the risk of tipping and accidents.
Operating Procedures: Learn to operate front end loader controls according to manufacturer specifications. Training covers starting and stopping, bucket controls and movement, loading, lifting, transporting, unloading and dumping materials, safe positioning, working on slopes and uneven terrain, and effective driving and manoeuvring techniques.
Material Handling & Loading: Develop practical skills for safely scooping, lifting, transporting, stockpiling, loading and dumping materials while maintaining machine stability and staying within rated operating capacities.
Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown procedures, cleaning and securing the front end loader, parking according to site requirements, checking the machine after operation, reporting faults, and completing workplace logs, inspection reports, and other required documentation.
