Our Stick Welding Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in workshop, construction, and industrial environments. The training covers essential stick welding principles, welding machines and equipment, electrode selection, machine setup, welding current and polarity, joint preparation, welding positions, arc control, weld penetration, electrode handling, welding defects, weld inspection, and workplace safety procedures. Learners are guided on how to select suitable electrodes, prepare materials, set appropriate welding parameters, and produce quality welds while following manufacturer specifications, recognised welding practices, and workplace safety standards. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as construction, fabrication, manufacturing, engineering, mining, infrastructure development, structural steelwork, maintenance, and general welding operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers stick welding fundamentals, SMAW principles, welding equipment, electrode types and selection, machine setup, current and polarity, joint preparation, welding positions, arc control, weld penetration, welding defects, weld inspection, PPE, and workplace safety.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in setting up welding equipment, selecting and handling electrodes, preparing materials and joints, striking and maintaining the arc, controlling travel speed and electrode angle, producing weld beads, welding different joint types and positions, and identifying and correcting common welding defects.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical welding technique, equipment setup, electrode selection, weld quality, safety awareness, and ability to produce sound stick welds safely and effectively.
Introduction to Stick Welding: Learn the fundamentals of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), common applications, advantages and limitations, welding terminology, and the basic principles of arc welding.
Welding Safety & PPE: Understand essential welding safety requirements, including PPE, electrical safety, welding fumes, ventilation, fire prevention, hot work procedures, and safe workshop practices.
Welding Equipment & Machine Setup: Learn about welding machines, electrode holders, earth clamps, cables, power sources, and related equipment. Training covers machine setup, current selection, polarity, and safe equipment operation.
Electrodes & Consumables: Learn about different types of welding electrodes, electrode classifications, correct electrode selection, storage, handling, and the effect of electrode choice on weld quality.
Material & Joint Preparation: Learn how to measure, mark, cut, clean, bevel, align, and prepare materials and joints before welding to achieve proper fit-up and weld penetration.
Stick Welding Techniques: Develop knowledge of arc striking, arc length, electrode angle, travel speed, amperage control, weld bead formation, penetration, and slag removal for consistent weld quality.
Welding Positions & Joint Types: Learn techniques for welding common joint configurations, including butt joints, lap joints, corner joints, and T-joints, in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Welding Defects & Quality Inspection: Learn to identify common defects such as porosity, undercut, cracking, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, excessive spatter, and slag inclusion, including their causes, prevention, and basic visual inspection.
Post-Welding Procedures: Learn proper slag removal, weld cleaning, visual inspection, equipment shutdown, electrode storage, and maintenance of welding equipment after completing welding operations.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
