Our TIG Welding Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and effectively perform Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding in professional workshop, fabrication, and industrial environments. The training covers essential TIG welding principles, welding equipment and setup, tungsten electrode selection, shielding gases, welding current and polarity, filler rods, material preparation, joint preparation, welding positions, arc control, heat management, weld penetration, weld defects, weld inspection, and workplace safety procedures. Learners are guided on how to select suitable welding parameters and consumables, prepare materials correctly, and produce clean, controlled welds while following manufacturer specifications, recognised welding practices, and workplace safety standards. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as fabrication, manufacturing, construction, engineering, automotive, stainless steel work, aluminium fabrication, piping, maintenance, and industrial welding operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers TIG welding fundamentals, GTAW principles, welding equipment, machine setup, tungsten electrode selection, shielding gases, filler rods, current and polarity, joint preparation, welding positions, heat control, weld penetration, welding defects, weld inspection, PPE, and workplace safety.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in setting up TIG welding equipment, selecting and preparing tungsten electrodes, adjusting welding parameters and gas flow, preparing materials and joints, striking and controlling the arc, feeding filler rod, controlling heat and travel speed, producing consistent weld beads, and welding different materials, joints, and positions.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, TIG welding technique, equipment setup, material preparation, arc control, weld quality, safety awareness, and ability to produce clean and sound TIG welds safely and effectively.
Introduction to TIG Welding: Learn the fundamentals of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding / Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), including its principles, applications, advantages, limitations, and the materials commonly welded using TIG.
TIG Welding Equipment: Learn about TIG welding machines, torches, tungsten electrodes, earth clamps, cables, regulators, gas cylinders, foot pedals, and other equipment. Training covers machine setup, controls, current selection, polarity, and safe equipment operation.
Tungsten Electrodes & Shielding Gas: Understand different tungsten electrode types, selection, preparation, grinding, and handling, as well as shielding gas selection, gas flow rates, and the importance of maintaining adequate gas coverage.
Material & Joint Preparation: Learn how to measure, mark, cut, clean, bevel, align, and prepare materials and joints before welding. Training also covers preventing contamination and achieving correct joint fit-up.
TIG Welding Techniques: Develop skills in arc starting, arc length, torch angle, travel speed, filler rod feeding, heat control, weld penetration, and bead formation to produce clean and consistent welds.
Welding Materials: Learn TIG welding techniques for commonly used materials such as mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium, including appropriate machine settings and welding considerations for different materials.
Welding Positions & Joint Types: Learn techniques for welding common configurations including butt joints, lap joints, corner joints, and T-joints, across flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Welding Quality & Defects: Learn to identify common TIG welding defects such as porosity, cracking, lack of fusion, lack of penetration, undercut, contamination, and tungsten inclusions, including their causes, prevention, and basic visual inspection.
Welding Safety & PPE: Learn essential safety requirements including PPE, welding fumes, ventilation, shielding gas safety, electrical safety, fire prevention, hot work procedures, and safe workshop practices.
Post-Welding Procedures: Learn appropriate weld cleaning, inspection, equipment shutdown, torch and tungsten care, gas cylinder handling, and safe storage of welding equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
