5. What are the main hazards of working in confined spaces?
Confined spaces can expose workers to dangerous conditions that are not always visible or immediately noticeable. Understanding these hazards is essential before entering an enclosed or restricted work area.Common hazards include:
Oxygen Deficiency: Low oxygen levels can cause dizziness, confusion, unconsciousness and potentially fatal consequences.
Oxygen Enrichment: Excess oxygen increases the risk of fires and makes combustible materials ignite more easily.
Toxic Gases: Harmful gases can cause poisoning, respiratory problems and serious health effects.
Flammable Atmospheres: Certain gases and vapours can create fire or explosion risks.
Poor Ventilation: Limited airflow allows dangerous gases and contaminants to accumulate.
Engulfment: Workers can become trapped or buried by liquids, grain, powders or other loose materials.
Restricted Access: Narrow entrances and exits can make evacuation and rescue difficult.
Mechanical and Electrical Hazards: Moving equipment, electrical systems and machinery can create additional dangers.
Identifying these hazards helps workers understand why confined spaces require proper assessments, monitoring and safety controls.
6. What equipment is used when working in confined spaces?
Confined space work requires appropriate safety equipment to identify hazards, monitor atmospheric conditions and protect workers during entry and operations.Common equipment includes:
Portable gas detectors and atmospheric monitoring equipment.
Oxygen and gas testing instruments.
Ventilation fans and air blowers.
Respiratory protective equipment.
Safety harnesses and lifelines.
Tripods and retrieval systems.
Protective clothing and safety footwear.
Safety helmets and gloves.
Communication equipment.
Portable lighting suitable for the working environment.
Emergency rescue equipment.
The selection of equipment depends on the identified hazards, workplace conditions and confined space entry requirements.
7. What is atmospheric testing in confined spaces?
Atmospheric testing involves checking the air inside a confined space to determine whether it is safe for workers to enter. Dangerous atmospheric conditions can exist even when the space looks clean and appears safe.Atmospheric testing generally checks:
Oxygen Levels: Determines whether oxygen concentrations are within safe limits.
Flammable Gases: Identifies gases or vapours that could create fire and explosion hazards.
Toxic Gases: Detects harmful substances such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide.
Testing is conducted using suitable gas detection equipment. Atmospheric conditions must be assessed before entry and monitored as required throughout the work.
8. What is a confined space entry permit?
A confined space entry permit is a formal authorisation document used to control and manage entry into a confined space. It confirms that the required safety checks and precautions have been addressed before workers enter.A confined space entry permit generally includes:
Identification of the confined space.
Description of the work being performed.
Hazard identification and risk assessment.
Atmospheric testing results.
Required ventilation arrangements.
Isolation of hazardous energy sources.
Personal protective equipment requirements.
Names and responsibilities of authorised personnel.
Communication arrangements.
Emergency and rescue procedures.
Permit approval and authorisation.
The permit helps ensure that entry is properly controlled and that workers understand the hazards and safety precautions.
9. What are the responsibilities of a confined space attendant?
A confined space attendant, also known as a standby person, remains outside the confined space to monitor workers and support safe entry operations.Important responsibilities include:
Maintaining communication with workers inside the space.
Monitoring the number of workers who have entered.
Keeping track of entry and exit activities.
Recognising warning signs and dangerous conditions.
Monitoring atmospheric conditions as required.
Preventing unauthorised entry.
Alerting emergency response personnel when necessary.
Following established emergency procedures.
A confined space attendant plays an important role in monitoring workers and ensuring that emergency situations are reported promptly.
