Our arc welding training introduces learners to the equipment, materials and techniques used to join metal components through electric arc welding. The course covers welding principles, electrode selection, metal preparation, welding positions, joint types and workshop safety. It is suitable for beginners and individuals who want to develop foundational welding skills for fabrication, construction, manufacturing and maintenance environments.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

 1. How much does arc welding training cost?
Our arc welding training costs R8,500 per person for the four-week programme. The course introduces learners to arc welding equipment, electrodes, welding techniques, metal preparation and the safety procedures required when working in a welding environment.

2. What is arc welding?
Arc welding is a metal-joining process that uses an electric arc to generate heat and fuse metal components together. The arc forms between an electrode and the workpiece, producing enough heat to melt the metal and create a weld joint.

One commonly used form is Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding or stick welding. It uses a flux-coated consumable electrode to create the weld and provide shielding during the process.

Arc welding is widely used in:

  • Construction and structural steel fabrication.

  • Engineering and manufacturing workshops.

  • Industrial maintenance and repairs.

  • Pipeline and metal fabrication work.

  • Agricultural equipment repairs.

  • General steel fabrication.

3. Is arc welding difficult to learn?
Arc welding requires practice and an understanding of how to control the welding arc, electrode movement and heat input. Beginners need to develop good hand control and learn how to maintain a consistent welding technique.

Important skills include:

  • Striking and maintaining a stable welding arc.

  • Selecting suitable electrodes.

  • Controlling welding current and arc length.

  • Maintaining correct electrode angles and travel speed.

  • Producing consistent weld beads.

  • Identifying common welding defects.

Understanding these fundamentals provides a foundation for developing arc welding skills.

4. What does an arc welding course cover?
The course introduces learners to the principles and practical techniques involved in arc welding. Key learning areas include:

  • Arc welding principles and processes.

  • Welding machine components and operation.

  • Electrode types, classifications and selection.

  • Metal preparation and cleaning.

  • Welding joints and joint preparation.

  • Flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead welding positions.

  • Current settings, arc length and electrode movement.

  • Weld bead formation and quality.

  • Common welding defects and their causes.

  • Workshop safety and protective equipment.

5. Which welding processes use an electric arc?
Several welding processes use an electric arc to generate heat and join metals. Common examples include:

  • SMAW (Stick Welding): Uses a flux-coated consumable electrode. It is widely used in construction, fabrication and maintenance.

  • MIG/MAG Welding: Uses a continuously fed wire electrode and shielding gas or an appropriate active gas mixture. It is commonly used in manufacturing and production.

  • TIG Welding: Uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and shielding gas, with filler material added separately when required.

  • Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW): Uses a tubular flux-filled wire electrode and is commonly used in fabrication and construction.

The processes differ in equipment, consumables and applications. Stick welding is particularly relevant to introductory arc welding training.

6. What equipment is used for arc welding?
Arc welding requires equipment that supplies electrical current and allows the welder to control the welding process.

Common equipment includes:

  • Arc welding machine or power source.

  • Electrode holder and welding cables.

  • Earth clamp and work connection.

  • Flux-coated welding electrodes.

  • Chipping hammer and wire brush.

  • Welding clamps and workholding equipment.

  • Measuring and marking tools.

  • Welding helmet, gloves and protective clothing.

The correct equipment, electrode and current settings are important for safe operation and consistent weld quality.

7. What metals can be joined using arc welding?
Arc welding is commonly used to join different types of metals, depending on the welding process, electrode and material specifications.

Common materials include:

  • Mild steel: Widely used in structural fabrication, construction and general metalworking.

  • Carbon steel: Used in machinery, industrial equipment and engineering applications.

  • Stainless steel: Used where corrosion resistance is required, with suitable electrodes and procedures.

  • Low-alloy steel: Used in certain structural and industrial applications.

Material thickness, composition and joint design influence the choice of electrode and welding procedure.

8. What are the common challenges in arc welding?
Arc welding requires control of the electrical settings, electrode movement and welding conditions. Common problems include:

  • Porosity: Gas pockets form inside the weld because of contamination, moisture or inadequate protection.

  • Slag inclusion: Slag becomes trapped in the weld metal, often because of poor cleaning or welding technique.

  • Undercut: A groove forms along the edge of the weld when heat or travel speed is unsuitable.

  • Lack of fusion: The weld metal does not properly fuse with the base material or previous weld pass.

  • Cracking: Cracks develop in the weld or surrounding metal due to material, heat or welding procedure issues.

  • Spatter: Small droplets of molten metal scatter around the weld area.

  • Inconsistent weld beads: Incorrect electrode angle, arc length or travel speed produces uneven welds.

Understanding these defects helps learners recognise the importance of correct settings, material preparation and welding technique.

9. Where can an arc welder work?
Arc welding is used across industries that manufacture, construct, repair and maintain metal structures and equipment.

Work environments include:

  • Steel fabrication workshops.

  • Construction and structural engineering companies.

  • Manufacturing plants.

  • Industrial maintenance workshops.

  • Engineering and repair businesses.

  • Agricultural machinery workshops.

  • Metal fabrication and equipment repair facilities.

10. What career opportunities are available after arc welding training?
Arc welding knowledge provides a foundation for individuals interested in developing skills in welding, fabrication and metalworking.

Potential job opportunities include:

  • Welding assistant.

  • Junior welder.

  • Fabrication assistant.

  • Metal fabrication worker.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Structural steel fabrication assistant.

  • Industrial maintenance assistant.

  • Manufacturing and assembly worker.

Further welding experience and specialised training can help learners develop their skills and pursue more advanced welding work.

11. Can I get an arc welding certificate after training?
Yes. Learners who successfully complete the required course assessments receive a training certificate confirming completion of the arc welding programme. The certificate can be included in a CV when applying for opportunities in welding, fabrication, construction and manufacturing.

12. What are the requirements for arc welding training?
The course is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in learning welding fundamentals. Previous welding experience is useful but is not essential for understanding introductory arc welding principles.

Learners should be prepared to:

  • Follow workshop instructions and safety procedures.

  • Understand basic measurements.

  • Learn how to handle welding equipment and electrodes.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Participate in the required learning and assessment activities.
