Our LHD Scoop Operator Training Course is designed to equip learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely and efficiently operate a Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) scoop in demanding underground mining environments. The training covers essential machine operations, safety procedures, pre-start inspections, operating controls, hydraulic systems, bucket operation, loading and hauling techniques, dumping procedures, underground hazards, confined-space awareness, and emergency procedures. Learners are guided on how to operate the equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, mine safety requirements, site procedures, and recognised workplace safety practices. The course combines classroom knowledge with hands-on practical training to help learners develop the confidence and competence required to operate an LHD scoop in industries such as underground mining, hard-rock mining, tunnelling, quarrying, and mineral extraction operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers LHD scoop fundamentals, machine components and controls, manufacturer specifications, pre-start inspections, hydraulic systems, bucket capacity, load stability, underground mining safety, PPE, hazard identification, confined-space awareness, mine traffic rules, emergency procedures, and safe loading and hauling practices.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in starting and stopping the LHD scoop, steering and manoeuvring, operating the bucket, loading broken rock and materials, hauling and transporting loads, dumping materials, operating in confined underground areas, navigating ramps and uneven ground, positioning the machine, and maintaining safe distances from other equipment and personnel.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical LHD scoop operation, loading and hauling ability, safety awareness, machine control, and ability to operate the equipment safely and competently.
Machine Orientation: Learn what an LHD scoop is, its functions, and its role in underground mining and material handling. Training covers the main components and their functions, including the bucket, articulation joints, operator cab, engine, and hydraulic systems, as well as safety features, warning systems, maximum operating capacities, machine indicators, and manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to perform thorough pre-start inspections, including checking tyres, fluid levels, brakes, hydraulic systems, bucket condition, controls, and the overall machine condition. Learners are trained to identify and report faults and understand the manufacturer’s operating manual before using the machine.
Safe Operating Procedures: Learn safe operating practices covering PPE, site safety, underground hazards, associated risks, confined-space awareness, ventilation considerations, emergency procedures, and basic first aid awareness.
Operating Procedures: Learn safe starting and shutdown procedures, LHD controls, bucket operation, loading techniques, manoeuvring, and safe movement through underground working areas. Training also covers identifying and avoiding hazards such as rock falls, poor visibility, ventilation issues, blind spots, and other underground risks.
Loading & Material Handling: Develop practical skills in approaching and loading material, managing load balance and centre of gravity, maintaining machine stability, and transporting loads safely through underground areas.
Dumping Procedures: Learn safe dumping techniques at stockpiles, crushers, ore passes, and designated dumping points, including correct positioning, bucket control, awareness of surrounding hazards, and maintaining safe distances.
Operator Responsibilities: Understand the responsibility of an LHD scoop operator for safe machine operation once a load is moved. Learners are taught to remain alert to changing underground conditions, identify unsafe situations, and report hazards, faults, or concerns before continuing operations.
Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown and parking procedures, cleaning and securing the LHD scoop, inspecting the machine after operation, reporting defects, and completing required workplace logs, inspection reports, and operational documentation.
