Our Practical Argon Welding Training course teaches learners how to produce clean, precise welds on materials such as aluminium, stainless steel, and pipes using an inert shielding gas—primarily argon (Ar)—and a non-consumable tungsten electrode.
The course combines essential theory with hands-on practical training, covering correct equipment setup, welding techniques, gas control, and safe working practices. It is suitable for beginners and individuals looking to develop professional welding skills.
Theory Training – 20%: The theory component provides learners with a strong foundation in Argon Welding through structured classroom lessons, discussions, and learning activities. Training covers TIG and MIG welding principles, equipment, shielding gases, materials, welding currents, polarity, welding techniques, safety procedures, and correct operating practices.
Practical Training – 80%: The practical component provides hands-on workshop training where learners apply their theoretical knowledge under professional supervision. Learners practise setting up welding equipment, preparing materials, selecting electrodes and filler materials, controlling the torch, adjusting gas flow, and producing quality welds on aluminium, stainless steel, and other suitable materials.
Competency Assessment: Learners undergo a competency assessment conducted by qualified assessors and moderators. The assessment evaluates their theoretical knowledge, practical welding ability, equipment handling, safety awareness, welding quality, and ability to complete tasks correctly and safely.
Introduction to TIG Welding: Understanding TIG welding principles, different welding processes, equipment setup, gas cylinders, welding accessories, and essential safety requirements.
Safety & PPE Regulations: Safe handling of shielding gases and cylinders, proper ventilation and fume control, correct use of PPE, fire prevention, electrical safety, and general workshop safety procedures.
Argon Gas & Shielding: Understanding argon and other shielding gases, suitable gas selection for TIG and MIG welding, correct flow rates, shielding principles, and preventing contamination during welding.
TIG Argon Welding (GTAW): Machine setup, electrode selection, torch control, polarity, heat control, and proper TIG welding techniques.
MIG Argon Welding: Gas mixture fundamentals, wire feeding, machine adjustments, polarity, and effective MIG welding practices.
Stainless Steel Welding: Material and edge preparation, heat control, appropriate welding techniques, and finishing and polishing methods.
Aluminium Welding: AC/DC machine settings, filler rod selection, heat management, and techniques for reducing cracking and other common welding problems.
Welding Techniques & Joint Types: Practical techniques for Butt, Fillet, Lap, and Groove welds, including methods for welding thin aluminium and stainless-steel sheets.
Quality Inspection & Defects: Identifying common welding defects such as porosity, undercut, cracking, and contamination, together with basic weld inspection and quality control practices.
Safety & PPE: Safe handling of gas cylinders, ventilation and fume control, correct use of PPE, fire prevention, and general workshop safety procedures.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
