Our Reach Stacker / Container Handler Operator Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and efficiently operate heavy container-handling equipment in demanding logistics and industrial environments. The training covers essential machine operations, safety procedures, pre-start inspections, operating controls, container handling, lifting and lowering techniques, load capacity, stability, stacking and unstacking containers, workplace hazards, communication procedures, and emergency response. Learners are guided on how to operate the equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, site requirements, container-handling procedures, and recognised workplace safety practices. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as ports, container terminals, logistics yards, freight and distribution centres, shipping operations, warehouses, and industrial facilities.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers reach stacker and container handler fundamentals, machine components and controls, manufacturer specifications, pre-start inspections, rated capacity and load charts, container weights, stability, lifting principles, workplace safety, PPE, hazard identification, site traffic rules, communication procedures, and emergency response.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in starting and stopping the machine, steering and manoeuvring, operating the boom and spreader, engaging and releasing containers, lifting and lowering containers, transporting and positioning containers, stacking and unstacking, working in confined areas, maintaining safe clearances, and operating safely around other vehicles and personnel.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical machine operation, container handling, load management, manoeuvring, safety awareness, and ability to operate the reach stacker safely and competently.
Machine Orientation: Learn what a reach stacker/container handler is, its functions, applications, different types, and the main components and their functions. Training covers the boom, spreader, operator cab, hydraulic systems, tyres, counterweight, controls, safety features, warning systems, and rated operating capacities according to manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to conduct thorough pre-start inspections, including checking tyres, brakes, fluid levels, hydraulic systems, boom, spreader, lifting equipment, steering, controls, lights, alarms, and overall machine condition. Learners are trained to identify, report, and record faults before operation.
Site Preparation & Work Planning: Learn how to assess and prepare container-handling areas before operation. Training covers traffic routes, container stacking areas, ground conditions, pedestrian zones, required PPE, safety signs, exclusion areas, and safe operating distances.
Safe Operating Procedures: Develop safe operating practices covering PPE, site safety, container-handling hazards, load stability, visibility, blind spots, pedestrian awareness, working around other heavy equipment, weather conditions, and emergency procedures.
Operating Procedures: Learn to operate the reach stacker/container handler controls according to manufacturer specifications. Training covers starting and stopping, steering, braking, boom movement, spreader operation, lifting and lowering, telescopic boom functions, container engagement, and safe manoeuvring.
Container Handling & Stacking: Develop practical skills in engaging containers, lifting and transporting containers, positioning containers accurately, stacking and unstacking, maintaining container stability, and working within rated load capacities.
Load Management & Stability: Learn how container weight, load position, boom reach, lifting height, ground conditions, and machine stability affect safe operation. Training covers maintaining the correct centre of gravity and avoiding overloading, tipping, and unstable loads.
Yard & Terminal Operations: Learn safe operating procedures in ports, container terminals, logistics yards, freight facilities, and container storage areas, including traffic management, communication with other operators, safe travel routes, and maintaining awareness of surrounding vehicles and personnel.
Communication & Emergency Procedures: Learn effective communication between operators, supervisors, signalers, and other site personnel. Training covers hand signals, radio communication, emergency stops, equipment faults, unstable loads, and responding to workplace emergencies.
Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown and parking procedures, lowering and securing the boom and spreader, parking in designated areas, cleaning and securing the machine, reporting faults, and completing required inspection logs and operational documentation.
