Our Overhead Crane Operator Training Course is designed to equip learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely and efficiently operate an overhead crane in demanding workplace environments. The training covers essential crane operations, safety procedures, pre-start inspections, crane controls, lifting and lowering techniques, load handling, load capacity, rigging and slinging awareness, workplace hazards, communication and signalling, and emergency procedures. Learners are guided on how to operate the equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, site requirements, lifting procedures, and recognised workplace safety practices. The course combines classroom knowledge with hands-on practical training to help learners develop the confidence and competence required to operate an overhead crane in industries such as manufacturing, construction, mining, engineering, warehouses, workshops, ports, logistics, and industrial operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers overhead crane fundamentals, crane types and applications, components and controls, manufacturer specifications, rated lifting capacity, load limits, pre-operation inspections, lifting principles, load stability, rigging and slinging awareness, workplace safety, PPE, hazard identification, communication and signalling, and emergency procedures.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in conducting crane inspections, operating the hoist, bridge and trolley controls, lifting and lowering loads, moving loads safely, positioning loads accurately, controlling suspended loads, working with lifting accessories, following signals from a designated signaller, and carrying out lifting operations under professional supervision.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical crane operation, load handling, equipment control, communication, safety awareness, and ability to operate the overhead crane safely and competently.
Machine Orientation: Learn what an overhead crane is, its functions, different types of overhead cranes, and their applications in lifting and material-handling operations. Training covers major crane components and their functions, including the bridge, trolley, hoist, hooks, wire ropes, controls, and lifting mechanisms, as well as safety features, warning systems, and manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to conduct pre-start inspections, including checking the hoist, hook, wire rope or chain, brakes, controls, limit switches, electrical systems, rails, trolley, bridge, and lifting accessories. Learners are trained to identify and report faults before operating the crane.
Site Preparation & Work Planning: Learn how to assess the work area before lifting operations, identify potential hazards, establish safe working zones, check the lifting path, and ensure that required PPE, lifting equipment, and safety signs are available.
Safe Operating Procedures: Develop safe operating practices covering PPE, workplace hazards, load capacity, overhead obstructions, electrical hazards, suspended loads, pedestrian awareness, emergency procedures, and safe distances. Learners also learn how to prevent uncontrolled load movement and unsafe lifting practices.
Operating Procedures: Learn to operate overhead crane controls according to manufacturer specifications. Training covers starting and stopping, hoisting and lowering, trolley movement, bridge movement, positioning the crane, load control, and operating within rated capacity.
Load Handling & Lifting Techniques: Develop skills in safely lifting, transporting, positioning, and lowering loads. Training covers load balance, centre of gravity, lifting capacity, controlled movements, avoiding sudden starts and stops, and maintaining safe clearance during load movement.
Rigging & Slinging Awareness: Learn basic principles of selecting and using slings, shackles, hooks, chains, and other lifting accessories, including checking lifting equipment, securing loads correctly, and ensuring loads are properly balanced before lifting.
Communication & Signalling: Learn effective communication between the crane operator and other personnel using standard hand signals, radio communication, agreed lifting signals, and clear instructions during lifting operations.
Emergency Procedures: Learn how to respond to crane alarms, equipment faults, dropped or unstable loads, power failures, and other workplace emergencies while following established site emergency procedures.
Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown procedures, lowering and securing the hook and lifting equipment, parking the crane correctly, switching off controls, reporting faults, and completing required workplace inspection logs and operational documentation.
