1. How much does gas welding training cost?
Our gas welding training (Oxy-Acetylene) costs R8,500 per person for the four-week programme. The course introduces learners to oxy-acetylene welding equipment, gas cylinders, welding torches, flame adjustment, metal preparation, welding techniques and the safety procedures required when working with gas welding equipment.

2. What is gas welding (oxy-acetylene)?
Gas welding, also known as oxy-acetylene welding, is a metal-joining process that uses a flame produced by burning oxygen and acetylene gas. The flame generates intense heat that melts the edges of metal components, allowing them to fuse together. Filler rods can be added when required to strengthen and complete the weld joint.

Oxy-acetylene welding is commonly used for joining, repairing and heating metal components. It is particularly useful for working with thinner metal sections and performing general metal fabrication and repair tasks.

Gas welding is widely used in:

  • Metal fabrication and engineering workshops.

  • Automotive repairs and bodywork.

  • Industrial maintenance and repairs.

  • Sheet metal fabrication.

  • Agricultural machinery repairs.

  • General metalworking and workshop operations.

3. Is gas welding difficult to learn?
Gas welding requires practice and an understanding of flame control, torch movement and heat application. Beginners need to develop good hand coordination and learn how to maintain the correct distance and angle between the welding torch and workpiece.

Important skills include:

  • Lighting and adjusting an oxy-acetylene torch.

  • Identifying different flame types.

  • Controlling oxygen and acetylene flow.

  • Maintaining the correct torch angle and distance.

  • Controlling heat input and travel speed.

  • Adding filler rods when required.

  • Producing consistent weld beads.

  • Recognising common welding defects.

Understanding these fundamentals provides a foundation for developing practical gas welding skills.

4. What does a gas welding course cover?
The course introduces learners to the principles, equipment and practical techniques involved in oxy-acetylene welding. Key learning areas include:

  • Oxy-acetylene welding principles and applications.

  • Oxygen and acetylene gas cylinders.

  • Welding torch components and operation.

  • Regulators, hoses and gas connections.

  • Lighting and shutting down welding equipment.

  • Neutral, oxidising and carburising flames.

  • Flame adjustment and heat control.

  • Filler rods and their applications.

  • Metal preparation and cleaning.

  • Welding joints and joint preparation.

  • Flat and other basic welding positions.

  • Torch angles and welding techniques.

  • Weld bead formation and quality.

  • Common welding defects and their causes.

  • Gas welding safety procedures and protective equipment.

5. What are the three types of oxy-acetylene flames?
Oxy-acetylene welding uses three main flame types. Each flame has different characteristics and applications depending on the metal being worked on.

  • Neutral Flame: Has a balanced mixture of oxygen and acetylene. It is the most commonly used flame for general welding because it provides controlled heat without significantly oxidising or adding carbon to the metal.

  • Oxidising Flame: Contains excess oxygen and produces a hotter, more concentrated flame. It is used for certain specialised metalworking applications.

  • Carburising Flame: Contains excess acetylene and creates a flame with a carbon-rich zone. It is used in selected applications where a reducing or carburising effect is required.

Understanding these flame types helps welders select the appropriate flame for different materials and welding tasks.

6. What equipment is used for gas welding?
Oxy-acetylene welding requires specialised equipment to store, regulate and deliver oxygen and acetylene safely to the welding torch.

Common equipment includes:

  • Oxygen gas cylinder.

  • Acetylene gas cylinder.

  • Oxy-acetylene welding torch.

  • Oxygen and acetylene regulators.

  • Gas hoses.

  • Torch tips and nozzles.

  • Spark lighter or flint striker.

  • Filler rods.

  • Welding clamps and workholding equipment.

  • Welding goggles and protective gloves.

  • Protective clothing and safety footwear.

  • Flashback arrestors and non-return valves.

Correct equipment setup, gas pressure regulation and proper handling procedures are essential for safe welding operations.

7. What metals can be joined using gas welding?
Oxy-acetylene welding can be used to join several types of metals, depending on their composition, thickness and the appropriate welding technique.

Common materials include:

  • Mild Steel: Commonly used in general fabrication, sheet metal work and equipment repairs.

  • Carbon Steel: Used in engineering, manufacturing and metal fabrication applications.

  • Stainless Steel: Can be gas welded using suitable techniques and filler materials, although heat control is important.

  • Cast Iron: Certain cast iron components can be repaired using specialised gas welding procedures.

  • Copper and Copper Alloys: Used in selected metalworking and repair applications.

Material thickness, thermal properties and joint preparation influence the choice of welding technique and filler material.

8. What is the difference between gas welding and arc welding?
Gas welding and arc welding are both metal-joining processes, but they use different heat sources to melt and join materials.

  • Gas Welding: Uses a flame produced by burning oxygen and acetylene gas to generate heat. It requires gas cylinders, regulators, hoses and a welding torch.

  • Arc Welding: Uses an electric arc between an electrode and the workpiece to generate the heat required for welding. It requires an electrical power source and suitable welding electrodes.

Gas welding is commonly used for sheet metal work, repairs and heating applications, while arc welding is widely used in structural steel fabrication, construction and industrial maintenance.

9. What are the common challenges in gas welding?
Gas welding requires proper flame adjustment, torch control and heat management. Common problems include:

  • Oxidation: Excess oxygen causes unwanted oxidation of the metal during welding.

  • Porosity: Gas pockets form inside the weld because of contamination or unsuitable welding conditions.

  • Burn-through: Excessive heat melts through thin metal sections.

  • Incomplete Fusion: The edges of the metal do not properly melt and join together.

  • Distortion: Excessive or uneven heat causes the metal to change shape.

  • Cracking: Cracks develop in the weld or surrounding material because of unsuitable welding conditions.

  • Inconsistent Weld Beads: Incorrect torch movement, flame adjustment or travel speed produces uneven welds.

Understanding these defects helps learners recognise the importance of flame control, material preparation and correct welding techniques.

10. Where can a gas welder work?
Gas welding is used in industries that manufacture, repair and maintain metal components, equipment and structures.

Work environments include:

  • Metal fabrication workshops.

  • Automotive repair businesses.

  • Engineering and manufacturing companies.

  • Industrial maintenance workshops.

  • Sheet metal fabrication facilities.

  • Agricultural machinery repair workshops.

  • General welding and metalworking businesses.

  • Equipment maintenance and repair facilities.

11. What career opportunities are available after gas welding training?
Gas welding knowledge provides a foundation for individuals interested in developing skills in welding, metal fabrication and equipment maintenance.

Potential job opportunities include:

  • Welding assistant.

  • Junior gas welder.

  • Fabrication assistant.

  • Metal fabrication worker.

  • Sheet metal worker.

  • Automotive repair assistant.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Industrial maintenance assistant.

  • Manufacturing and assembly worker.

Further welding experience and specialised training can help learners develop their skills and pursue more advanced welding and fabrication opportunities.

12. Can I get a gas welding certificate after training?
Yes. Learners who successfully complete the required course assessments receive a training certificate confirming completion of the gas welding (Oxy-Acetylene) programme. The certificate can be included in a CV when applying for opportunities in welding, metal fabrication, automotive repairs, engineering and manufacturing.

13. What are the requirements for gas welding training?
