Boilermaking is an important trade in construction, mining, manufacturing, engineering and metal fabrication. Boilermakers work with metal plates, sheets and structural components to fabricate, assemble and repair products such as tanks, hoppers, steel structures and industrial equipment. Our basic Boilermaker Training Course introduces learners to metal preparation, measuring, marking, cutting, shaping and fabrication techniques. The 4-week course helps beginners develop foundational practical skills for metalworking, fabrication and industrial workshop environments.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots and Drawing Board.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

How much does boilermaker training cost?
Our basic Boilermaker Training Course costs R8,500 per person for 4 weeks of training. The course introduces learners to metal fabrication tools, measuring techniques, cutting and shaping methods, metal assembly and workshop safety. Learners develop an understanding of how metal components are prepared and assembled for different fabrication projects.

Is boilermaking difficult to learn?
Boilermaking becomes easier with proper instruction, demonstrations and practical exercises. Beginners learn how to measure metal accurately, mark cutting lines, prepare materials and understand how metal components fit together. As learners practise these techniques, they develop accuracy, coordination and confidence when working with metal.

The trade also involves understanding measurements, fabrication drawings, material thickness and the importance of accurate alignment. Our basic training introduces these concepts progressively, helping learners understand the processes involved in producing and assembling metal components.

What does a Boilermaker Course cover?
Our basic Boilermaker Course introduces learners to the fundamental knowledge and practical techniques used in metal fabrication and assembly. Training covers:

  • Introduction to boilermaking: Understanding the role of boilermakers in construction, manufacturing, mining and industrial operations.

  • Tools and equipment: Identifying common boilermaking tools, measuring equipment and metalworking machinery.

  • Metal types and materials: Understanding common metals used in fabrication and their basic applications.

  • Measuring and marking out: Measuring materials and marking cutting lines and component dimensions accurately.

  • Metal cutting: Introduction to basic cutting methods used to prepare metal components.

  • Grinding and edge preparation: Preparing metal edges and surfaces for fabrication and joining.

  • Metal shaping: Understanding basic techniques for shaping and preparing metal components.

  • Fabrication drawings: Introduction to basic engineering drawings, measurements and fabrication layouts.

  • Metal assembly: Positioning, aligning and assembling metal components.

  • Joining techniques: Understanding basic joining methods, including welding where covered by the programme.

  • Plates and structural components: Introduction to working with metal plates, brackets, frames and structural sections.

  • Inspection and quality checks: Recognising measurement errors, alignment problems and common fabrication defects.

  • Workshop safety: Using personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe metalworking procedures.

The practical component helps learners become familiar with metalworking tools and materials while developing foundational skills in measuring, preparing, cutting and assembling metal components.

Where can a boilermaker work?
Boilermaking skills are used in industries that manufacture, install, maintain and repair metal structures and equipment. Learners can pursue relevant entry-level opportunities in environments such as:

  • Mining operations: Assisting with metal fabrication and equipment maintenance.

  • Construction companies: Supporting structural steelwork and metal installation projects.

  • Manufacturing facilities: Assisting with the fabrication and assembly of metal products.

  • Engineering workshops: Supporting metal preparation, fabrication and repair tasks.

  • Steel fabrication businesses: Working with plates, frames, brackets and structural components.

  • Industrial maintenance companies: Assisting with metal repairs and component replacement.

  • Tank and vessel fabrication workshops: Supporting the preparation and assembly of metal sections.

  • Shipbuilding and heavy engineering: Assisting with suitable metal fabrication activities.

  • Agricultural equipment workshops: Helping fabricate and repair metal components.

  • Metal fabrication businesses: Assisting with cutting, shaping, fitting and assembling metal products.

What career opportunities are available after boilermaker training?
After completing our basic Boilermaker Training Course, learners can pursue entry-level opportunities such as boilermaker assistant, fabrication assistant, metalwork assistant or workshop assistant. These roles can provide experience in measuring, preparing, cutting, assembling and working with metal components.

The skills acquired can also help learners develop their understanding of fabrication drawings, workshop tools and metal assembly procedures. With further experience and skills development, learners can progress towards more advanced fabrication tasks and specialised metalworking activities.

Boilermaking provides a practical foundation for individuals interested in construction, mining, engineering, manufacturing and industrial maintenance.

Can I get a boilermaker certificate after training?
Yes, learners who successfully complete the course requirements receive a Boilermaker Training Certificate. The certificate provides evidence of completing our basic boilermaking training and can support applications for relevant entry-level positions in fabrication, construction and industrial workshops.

The course introduces learners to fundamental metalworking and fabrication techniques, providing a foundation they can build on through practical experience and further training.

What are the requirements for boilermaker training?
Our basic Boilermaker Course is suitable for beginners who want to develop practical metal fabrication skills. You do not need advanced boilermaking experience to start learning the fundamentals.

Learners should be able to understand instructions, concentrate during practical activities and follow workshop safety procedures. Basic measuring skills, coordination and attention to detail are helpful when marking out metal, preparing materials and assembling components.

A willingness to learn, work carefully with tools and follow instructions will help learners develop their skills throughout the course.
