What are the three types of confined spaces?
Confined spaces are commonly classified according to their characteristics and the hazards they present. Three common categories are:
- Non-permit confined spaces: Spaces without identified serious hazards requiring a permit-controlled entry programme.
- Permit-required confined spaces: Spaces containing or potentially containing serious hazards that require controlled entry procedures.
- Immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) spaces: Environments where conditions pose an immediate threat to life or could cause serious harm.
What are five examples of confined spaces?
Common examples of confined spaces include storage tanks, underground tunnels, silos, sewers and boilers. Other examples include pipelines, manholes, underground chambers and industrial vessels.
What are the four types of confined space hazards?
The four main categories of confined space hazards include:
- Atmospheric hazards: Oxygen deficiency or enrichment, toxic gases and flammable vapours.
- Physical hazards: Moving machinery, extreme temperatures, noise and restricted access.
- Engulfment hazards: Materials such as grain, sand, liquids or other substances that can trap or bury workers.
- Biological and chemical hazards: Harmful substances, bacteria, contaminants and chemical exposure.
What are the risks of working in confined spaces?
Working in confined spaces can expose employees to serious risks, including oxygen deficiency, toxic gas exposure, fires, explosions, drowning, engulfment, heat stress, falls and entrapment. Restricted access can also make rescue operations difficult during emergencies. Proper risk assessments, atmospheric testing, ventilation, supervision and emergency rescue arrangements are essential for protecting workers.
