Our argon welding training introduces learners to TIG welding equipment, shielding gas, filler materials and the techniques used to produce clean, controlled welds. The course focuses on understanding the welding process, preparing metal surfaces, selecting suitable materials and controlling the welding arc. It is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in developing welding skills for fabrication, engineering, manufacturing and metalworking environments.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

1. How much does argon welding training cost?
Our argon welding training costs R8,500 per person for the four-week programme. The course introduces learners to TIG welding principles, argon shielding gas, welding equipment, filler materials, metal preparation and workshop safety.

2. What is argon welding?
Argon welding commonly refers to TIG welding, a process that uses argon as a shielding gas to protect the welding area from contamination by the surrounding atmosphere.

TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding. It uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce an electric arc. The heat from the arc melts the base metal, while a separate filler rod can be added when required to form the weld joint.

Argon is used because it is an inert gas, meaning it does not readily react with the hot metal during welding. This helps protect the weld pool and supports the production of clean, high-quality welds.

Argon welding is used in:

  • Stainless steel fabrication.

  • Aluminium welding.

  • Engineering and manufacturing.

  • Automotive and vehicle component repairs.

  • Pipe and tube fabrication.

  • Food-processing equipment manufacturing.

  • General metal fabrication.

3. Is argon welding difficult to learn?
Argon welding requires good hand coordination and control because the welder must manage the torch, maintain the arc and add filler material when necessary. It also requires an understanding of shielding gas, electrode selection and heat input.

Important skills include:

  • Maintaining a stable welding arc.

  • Holding the TIG torch at the correct angle.

  • Controlling the arc length and heat input.

  • Adding filler material consistently.

  • Maintaining suitable shielding gas coverage.

  • Producing even weld beads.

Beginners can develop a foundation by understanding the equipment, learning the correct techniques and practising the fundamental principles of TIG welding.

4. What does an argon welding course cover?
The course introduces learners to the equipment, materials and procedures used in TIG welding. Key learning areas include:

  • TIG welding principles and operation.

  • Welding machine components and settings.

  • Argon shielding gas and its purpose.

  • Tungsten electrodes and electrode selection.

  • Filler rods and material compatibility.

  • Metal preparation and cleaning.

  • Welding joints and joint preparation.

  • Torch positioning and arc control.

  • Heat input and welding speed.

  • Weld quality and common defects.

  • Workshop safety and protective equipment.

5. Why is argon gas used in TIG welding?
Argon is used as a shielding gas because it protects the hot weld pool and tungsten electrode from oxygen, nitrogen and other atmospheric contaminants.

Without suitable shielding, the weld can become contaminated, affecting its appearance and quality. Argon provides a protective atmosphere around the welding arc and molten metal.

Its main functions include:

  • Protecting the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

  • Helping maintain a stable welding arc.

  • Protecting the tungsten electrode.

  • Supporting clean weld formation.

  • Reducing oxidation during welding.

Argon is commonly used for TIG welding of stainless steel, aluminium and other suitable metals.

6. What equipment is used for argon welding?
TIG welding requires specialised equipment that allows the welder to control the arc, shielding gas and filler material.

Common equipment includes:

  • TIG welding machine.

  • TIG welding torch.

  • Tungsten electrodes.

  • Argon gas cylinder.

  • Gas regulator and flowmeter.

  • Gas hoses and connections.

  • Filler rods.

  • Earth clamp and welding cables.

  • Metal cleaning and preparation tools.

  • Welding helmet, gloves and protective clothing.

The correct electrode, filler material, shielding gas flow and machine settings depend on the metal being welded and the application.

7. What metals can be welded using argon welding?
TIG welding with argon shielding gas is suitable for several metals, making it useful in fabrication and manufacturing.

Common materials include:

  • Stainless steel: Used in equipment, food-processing facilities, pipework and fabrication.

  • Mild steel: Used in general engineering and metal fabrication.

  • Aluminium: Used in vehicle components, frames, trailers and manufacturing.

  • Copper alloys: Used in specialised electrical and industrial applications.

  • Titanium: Used in specialised engineering and manufacturing applications.

Each material requires appropriate preparation, electrode selection, filler material and welding settings.

8. What are the common challenges in argon welding?
TIG welding requires control over several factors to produce a clean and consistent weld. Common challenges include:

  • Porosity: Gas pockets can form when the material is contaminated or shielding gas protection is inadequate.

  • Tungsten contamination: Touching the tungsten electrode against the molten weld pool can contaminate the electrode.

  • Poor fusion: Incorrect heat input or torch movement can prevent proper joining of the materials.

  • Cracking: Unsuitable filler material or welding procedures can contribute to cracking.

  • Distortion: Excessive heat can cause thin metal components to bend or change shape.

  • Inconsistent weld beads: Poor torch control, uneven travel speed or inconsistent filler addition can affect the weld appearance.

  • Inadequate gas coverage: Incorrect gas flow or poor torch positioning can expose the weld to atmospheric contamination.

Understanding these problems helps learners recognise the importance of clean materials, correct settings and proper TIG welding technique.

9. Where can an argon welder work?
Argon welding is used in industries where clean, controlled and precise metal joining is required.

Work environments include:

  • Stainless steel fabrication workshops.

  • Aluminium fabrication businesses.

  • Engineering and manufacturing plants.

  • Automotive component workshops.

  • Pipe and tube fabrication facilities.

  • Food-processing equipment manufacturers.

  • Industrial maintenance workshops.

  • Metal fabrication and repair businesses.

10. What career opportunities are available after argon welding training?
Argon welding knowledge provides a foundation for individuals interested in TIG welding, specialised fabrication and metalworking.

Potential job opportunities include:

  • TIG welding assistant.

  • Welding assistant.

  • Junior TIG welder.

  • Stainless steel fabrication assistant.

  • Aluminium fabrication assistant.

  • Metal fabrication worker.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Manufacturing and assembly worker.

Further experience and specialised welding development can help learners progress towards more advanced TIG welding applications.

11. Can I get an argon welding certificate after training?
Yes. Learners who successfully complete the required course assessments receive a training certificate confirming completion of the argon welding programme. The certificate can be included in a CV when applying for opportunities in welding, fabrication, manufacturing and engineering.

12. What are the requirements for argon welding training?
The course is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in learning TIG welding principles. Previous welding experience is useful but is not essential for understanding the introductory concepts.

Learners should be prepared to:

  • Follow workshop instructions and safety procedures.

  • Understand basic measurements.

  • Learn how to handle TIG welding equipment.

  • Understand the importance of clean materials and correct preparation.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Participate in the required learning and assessment activities.
