Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) training introduces learners to a welding process used in steel fabrication, construction, manufacturing and industrial maintenance. The course develops an understanding of FCAW equipment, welding wire, shielding methods, machine settings and practical welding techniques. Learners gain knowledge of preparing materials, producing welds and recognising common welding defects.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

1. How much does a Flux-Cored Arc Welding course cost?
Our Flux-Cored Arc Welding course costs R8,500 per person, with a training duration of 2 to 4 weeks. The programme combines theoretical instruction with practical skills development, covering FCAW equipment, welding techniques, material preparation and workshop safety.

2. What is Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)?
Flux-Cored Arc Welding, commonly called FCAW, is an arc welding process that uses a continuously fed tubular wire electrode containing flux. An electric arc forms between the wire and the workpiece, generating the heat needed to join metal components.

Depending on the wire type, FCAW can use external shielding gas or operate without external shielding gas through a self-shielded flux-cored wire. The process is widely used for welding steel structures, heavy fabrication and industrial components.

3. What do you learn in FCAW welding training?
The course introduces learners to the equipment, materials and techniques used in flux-cored arc welding.

Training topics include:

  • Principles of Flux-Cored Arc Welding.

  • FCAW equipment and machine components.

  • Types of flux-cored welding wires.

  • Gas-shielded and self-shielded FCAW.

  • Welding machine settings and adjustments.

  • Voltage, wire-feed speed and arc control.

  • Metal preparation and joint cleaning.

  • Welding positions and joint configurations.

  • Welding techniques and bead formation.

  • Identifying common welding defects.

  • Workshop safety and protective equipment.

4. What equipment is used in Flux-Cored Arc Welding?
FCAW uses specialised equipment to feed the tubular welding wire and maintain a stable welding arc. Learners are introduced to the purpose and operation of the main equipment components.

These include:

  • FCAW welding power source.

  • Wire-feed unit.

  • Flux-cored wire electrode.

  • Welding torch or gun.

  • Contact tips and nozzles.

  • Workpiece earth clamp.

  • Shielding gas supply for gas-shielded FCAW.

  • Welding helmet and protective clothing.

Understanding the equipment helps learners select the correct consumables, recognise equipment problems and maintain consistent welding conditions.

5. What is the difference between gas-shielded and self-shielded FCAW?
FCAW is available in two main variations.

  • Gas-shielded FCAW: Uses flux-cored wire together with an external shielding gas to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

  • Self-shielded FCAW: Uses specially formulated flux-cored wire that generates its own shielding protection, eliminating the need for an external shielding gas supply.

Both processes are used in fabrication and construction. The appropriate method depends on the welding application, material, wire specification and working conditions.

6. What materials can you weld using FCAW?
Flux-Cored Arc Welding is commonly used for joining carbon steel and low-alloy steel. Specific wire types are designed for different material grades, thicknesses and welding requirements.

The process is used for:

  • Mild steel plates.

  • Structural steel sections.

  • Steel pipes and components.

  • Heavy fabrication materials.

  • Industrial steel structures.

  • Construction and manufacturing components.

Selecting the correct wire and welding procedure is important for achieving suitable weld quality.

7. What welding positions are covered in FCAW training?
FCAW can be performed in different welding positions depending on the joint design, material and application.

Common positions include:

  • Flat welding.

  • Horizontal welding.

  • Vertical welding.

  • Overhead welding.

Learners are introduced to how welding position affects torch movement, weld-pool control, travel speed and bead formation.

8. What are common Flux-Cored Arc Welding defects?
Welding defects can affect the strength, appearance and quality of a completed weld. Training introduces learners to common imperfections and the factors that contribute to them.

Examples include:

  • Porosity.

  • Slag inclusions.

  • Undercut.

  • Lack of fusion.

  • Incomplete penetration.

  • Excessive spatter.

  • Irregular weld profiles.

Learners develop an understanding of how correct material preparation, suitable machine settings, clean welding surfaces and consistent technique contribute to better weld quality.

9. Where is Flux-Cored Arc Welding used?
FCAW is widely used in industries that involve steel fabrication and the joining of metal components.

Common applications include:

  • Structural steel fabrication.

  • Construction and infrastructure projects.

  • Shipbuilding and heavy engineering.

  • Manufacturing plants.

  • Industrial maintenance and repairs.

  • Mining and engineering workshops.

  • Heavy equipment fabrication.

10. What career opportunities are available after FCAW training?
FCAW skills are relevant to welding and metal fabrication environments. Training provides foundational process knowledge for individuals interested in developing their welding abilities.

Related work opportunities include:

  • Flux-core welding assistant.

  • Welding assistant.

  • Fabrication assistant.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Structural steel fabrication worker.

  • General welding and maintenance support.

Further experience and welding qualifications can support progression into more specialised welding roles.

11. Do you receive a Flux-Cored Arc Welding certificate?
Learners who successfully complete the required training and assessments receive a Flux-Cored Arc Welding training certificate confirming completion of the programme. The certificate can be included in a CV as evidence of FCAW training.

A course-completion certificate is different from a coded welder qualification. Specific welding jobs and projects can require additional practical tests, procedure-specific assessments or coded welder certification.

12. What are the requirements for FCAW welding training?
The course is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in developing welding and metal fabrication skills. Previous welding experience is useful but not essential for introductory training.

Learners should be prepared to:

  • Follow workshop safety procedures.

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Participate in theoretical instruction.

  • Complete practical welding exercises.

  • Learn to handle welding equipment and consumables.

  • Complete the required course assessments.
