We provide training information for individuals looking to develop their TLB operating skills for the workplace. Contact us for the online application process, training arrangements, and enrolment requirements.
1. What Does a TLB Operator Do in the Workplace?
Typical responsibilities include:
Excavating soil and digging trenches for construction and utility work.
Using the front loader bucket to scoop, lift, and move materials.
Operating the backhoe to dig and remove soil.
Loading and relocating soil, gravel, and other materials.
Checking the TLB before operating it.
Following workplace traffic rules and site safety procedures.
Identifying hazards and reporting equipment defects.
Positioning and stabilising the machine safely during excavation and loading operations.
People interested in TLB training should understand that operating a TLB involves more than learning how to drive a machine. Operators must also understand excavation techniques, loader and backhoe controls, ground conditions, machine stability, and safe operating procedures.
2. What Skills Do You Need to Operate a TLB?
TLB operators need a combination of practical operating skills, safety awareness, and the ability to follow workplace instructions.
Important skills include:
Machine control: Understanding the TLB’s controls, steering, braking, and operating functions.
Excavation and loading: Learning how to use the backhoe for digging and the front loader bucket for scooping, lifting, and moving materials.
Bucket control: Understanding how to operate and position the front loader bucket and backhoe attachment during excavation and loading tasks.
Spatial awareness: Judging distances, recognising obstacles, and manoeuvring safely around work areas, structures, and other machinery.
Hazard identification: Recognising unstable ground, underground services, pedestrians, restricted visibility, and other workplace risks.
Communication: Following site instructions, observing warning signs, and communicating effectively with supervisors and other operators.
Safety awareness: Understanding safe operating procedures, pre-operation inspections, machine stability, and the importance of following the manufacturer’s instructions.
These skills are relevant to people entering the construction, mining, roadworks, and earthmoving industries, as well as workers who need to develop their TLB operating competencies.
3. What Practical Skills Are Covered During TLB Training?
Examples of practical training activities include:
Identifying the TLB’s main components and controls.
Starting, stopping, steering, and manoeuvring the TLB.
Operating the backhoe to excavate soil and dig trenches.
Controlling the front loader bucket to scoop, lift, and move materials.
Positioning the machine correctly before excavation and loading tasks.
Loading and relocating soil, gravel, and other materials under controlled conditions.
Parking the TLB and securing it after use.
Demonstrating safe operating procedures during practical assessment.
4. Workplace Safety and Pre-Operation Inspections
The inspection includes checking:
Tyres, wheels, and visible structural components.
The front loader bucket, backhoe bucket, and attachment points.
Brakes, steering, and control systems.
Lights, warning devices, and other safety features.
Hydraulic systems, hoses, and connections for visible leaks or damage.
Stabiliser legs and their operating mechanisms.
Seat belts and operator restraints, where fitted.
The overall condition of the TLB.
Operators must report defects and must not operate equipment that is unsafe to use.
Workplace safety also involves checking the operating area, watching for pedestrians and other machinery, identifying uneven ground and underground services, following site traffic rules, and maintaining clear visibility during excavation and loading. Operators must also follow designated procedures when digging trenches, operating the loader bucket, deploying stabilisers, working near excavations, manoeuvring, and parking the machine.
Training teaches learners to apply safe operating procedures before, during, and after every TLB operation.

5. TLB Training and Assessment Information
Theoretical topics include:
TLB components and operating principles.
Front loader bucket and backhoe controls.
Excavation, trench digging, and material-handling techniques.
Workplace hazards and risk awareness.
Pre-operation inspections and defect reporting.
Safe excavation, loading, parking, and securing procedures.
Practical assessment involves demonstrating the ability to operate the TLB safely, manoeuvre correctly, excavate soil, control the loader bucket and backhoe, move materials, and follow the required operating procedures.
