Looking for a forklift certificate in South Africa? Forklift training helps learners develop the operating skills and safety knowledge required to handle forklifts in workplace environments. We provide forklift training in Germiston, Johannesburg, combining theoretical instruction with practical operating exercises and competency assessment. Our forklift training costs R2,500, with a course duration of 3 to 5 days.

1. How Do You Get a Forklift Certificate?

To obtain a forklift training certificate, learners must complete the required training and demonstrate competency through assessment. The process involves understanding forklift operating principles, learning workplace safety procedures and demonstrating the ability to operate the equipment correctly.

The process generally includes:

  • Registering for forklift training and confirming the entry requirements.

  • Completing theoretical instruction covering operating principles and safety procedures.

  • Participating in supervised practical forklift exercises.

  • Demonstrating the required operating skills during assessment.

  • Meeting the applicable competency requirements to receive the relevant training certificate.

Successful certification depends on meeting the requirements of the applicable training and assessment programme. A forklift training certificate documents the competencies assessed, while workplace authorisation and any additional employer requirements must also be satisfied.

2. What Does Forklift Training Cover?

Forklift training combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills development. Learners develop an understanding of equipment controls, load handling, workplace hazards and the procedures required for safe material handling.

Theoretical topics include:

  • Forklift components, controls and operating principles.

  • Load capacity, load stability and safe lifting procedures.

  • Pre-operation inspections and defect reporting.

  • Workplace hazards, pedestrian awareness and traffic rules.

  • Safe loading, unloading, stacking and material handling.

  • Parking procedures and securing the forklift after operation.

Practical training involves supervised exercises designed to develop controlled forklift operation. Learners practise starting, stopping, steering, manoeuvring, positioning the forks, lifting and lowering loads, transporting materials and placing loads in designated areas.

Practical exercises also cover pre-operation checks, identifying unsafe conditions and following the correct operating procedures throughout each task.

3. What Skills Must You Demonstrate to Obtain a Forklift Certificate?

Forklift operators need practical operating ability, safety awareness and the ability to follow workplace instructions. During training and assessment, learners must demonstrate the competencies required by the applicable programme.

Important skills include:

Forklift control: Operating the steering, brakes, lifting mechanisms and other controls correctly.

Load handling: Positioning the forks properly, lifting loads safely and maintaining stability within the forklift’s rated capacity.

Manoeuvring: Moving through designated operating areas, negotiating turns and positioning the forklift accurately.

Pre-operation inspections: Checking the forklift’s visible condition, tyres, forks, brakes, lights and other relevant components.

Hazard identification: Recognising pedestrians, obstructions, restricted visibility and unsafe operating conditions.

Safe parking: Lowering the forks, securing the forklift and following the required shutdown procedures.

Assessment evaluates the learner’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge and practical operating skills safely. Learners must meet the applicable assessment criteria to achieve the required outcome.

4. How Much Does Forklift Training Cost?

Our forklift training course costs R2,500 per learner. The course combines theoretical instruction with practical skills development to help learners understand forklift operation, load handling and workplace safety procedures.

Before registering, learners should confirm the training arrangements, assessment process, certification details and any additional requirements.

Contact us to enquire about registration, available training dates and the documentation required to enrol.

5. How Long Does It Take to Get a Forklift Certificate?

Our forklift training course takes 3 to 5 days. During this period, learners participate in theoretical instruction, supervised practical exercises and the required assessment activities.

The training covers forklift controls, pre-operation inspections, safe manoeuvring, load handling, workplace hazard awareness and operating procedures. Learners must demonstrate the required competencies during assessment to complete the programme successfully.

6. Is a Forklift Certificate the Same as a Driving Licence?

A forklift training certificate is different from a standard road-driving licence. A forklift certificate documents the training and competency assessment completed by an operator, while a road-driving licence authorises a person to drive the relevant class of motor vehicle on public roads.

Workplace forklift operators must receive appropriate training and authorisation in accordance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements. A training certificate does not automatically grant permission to operate every type of forklift or satisfy every employer’s requirements.
