Our Stainless Steel Welding course introduces learners to the techniques, equipment and materials used to join stainless steel components. The training develops an understanding of stainless steel properties, welding processes, joint preparation, heat control and weld quality. Learners gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to fabrication, manufacturing, engineering and maintenance environments.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

1. How much does a Stainless Steel Welding course cost?
Our Stainless Steel Welding course costs R8,500 per person and takes 4 weeks to complete. The programme combines theoretical instruction with practical skills development, covering stainless steel preparation, welding techniques, equipment, material properties and workshop safety.

2. What is stainless steel welding?
Stainless steel welding is the process of joining stainless steel components using heat and an appropriate welding method. Stainless steel contains chromium, which provides corrosion resistance by forming a protective surface layer.

Welding stainless steel requires attention to heat input, material preparation and suitable filler materials to help maintain the quality and corrosion resistance of the finished joint.

3. What do you learn in stainless steel welding training?
The course introduces learners to the essential knowledge and techniques used when welding stainless steel.

Training topics include:

  • Stainless steel properties and characteristics.

  • Types and grades of stainless steel.

  • Identifying stainless steel materials.

  • Welding equipment and consumables.

  • Surface cleaning and joint preparation.

  • Selecting suitable filler materials.

  • Welding processes and techniques.

  • Heat input and distortion control.

  • Welding positions and joint configurations.

  • Recognising common welding defects.

  • Weld inspection and quality awareness.

  • Workshop safety and protective equipment.

4. Which welding processes are used for stainless steel?
Different welding processes are used depending on the material thickness, joint design and application.

Common processes include:

  • TIG welding (GTAW): Uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and shielding gas to produce controlled, precise welds. It is commonly used for thin stainless steel and applications requiring a clean finish.

  • MIG welding (GMAW): Uses a continuously fed wire electrode and shielding gas. It is suitable for fabrication and production work.

  • Stick welding (SMAW): Uses a flux-coated electrode and is suitable for certain stainless steel welding applications.

  • Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW): Uses tubular flux-cored wire and is applied in selected stainless steel fabrication work with suitable consumables.

5. What types of stainless steel can be welded?
Stainless steel is available in different grades and families, each with distinct properties and welding considerations.

Common types include:

  • Austenitic stainless steel: Includes grades such as 304 and 316, widely used in food processing, chemical equipment and general fabrication.

  • Ferritic stainless steel: Used in applications such as appliances, automotive components and industrial equipment.

  • Martensitic stainless steel: Used in certain tools, blades and engineering components.

  • Duplex stainless steel: Combines properties of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels and is used in demanding industrial environments.

The correct welding procedure and filler material depend on the specific stainless steel grade.

6. What equipment is used for stainless steel welding?
Learners are introduced to common welding equipment and consumables used in stainless steel fabrication.

These include:

  • TIG, MIG or stick welding machines.

  • Welding torches and electrode holders.

  • Tungsten electrodes and filler rods.

  • Stainless steel welding wire and electrodes.

  • Shielding gas equipment.

  • Clamps and positioning tools.

  • Grinding and surface preparation equipment.

  • Welding helmets, gloves and protective clothing.

Using suitable equipment and dedicated stainless steel preparation tools helps reduce contamination and supports better weld quality.

7. Why is heat control important when welding stainless steel?
Stainless steel can be affected by excessive heat during welding. High heat input can cause distortion, discolouration and changes to the material’s corrosion resistance.

Learners are introduced to techniques for managing heat, controlling welding speed and selecting suitable settings. Proper joint preparation and appropriate welding procedures also help produce consistent results.

8. What are common stainless steel welding defects?
Welding defects can affect the appearance, strength and corrosion resistance of stainless steel joints.

Common defects include:

  • Porosity.

  • Cracking.

  • Lack of fusion.

  • Incomplete penetration.

  • Undercut.

  • Excessive spatter.

  • Distortion.

  • Heat discolouration.

  • Surface contamination.

Learners develop an understanding of how correct preparation, suitable consumables, controlled heat input and proper welding techniques help prevent defects.

9. Where is stainless steel welding used?
Stainless steel welding is used in industries that require corrosion-resistant components, hygienic surfaces or durable fabricated structures.

Common applications include:

  • Food and beverage processing.

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing.

  • Chemical processing plants.

  • Mining and engineering.

  • Construction and fabrication.

  • Automotive manufacturing.

  • Industrial maintenance.

  • Stainless steel tanks, pipes and equipment.

10. What career opportunities are available after stainless steel welding training?
Stainless steel welding skills are relevant to fabrication and manufacturing environments where stainless steel components are produced, installed or maintained.

Related work opportunities include:

  • Stainless steel welding assistant.

  • Fabrication assistant.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Metal fabrication worker.

  • Welding production assistant.

  • Industrial maintenance support worker.

Further practical experience and specialised welding assessments can support progression into more advanced stainless steel welding roles.

11. Do you receive a Stainless Steel Welding certificate?
Learners who successfully complete the required training and assessments receive a Stainless Steel Welding training certificate confirming completion of the programme. The certificate can be included in a CV as evidence of stainless steel welding training.

12. What are the requirements for stainless steel welding training?
The course is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in developing welding and metal fabrication skills. Previous welding experience is useful but not essential for introductory training.

Learners should be prepared to:

  • Follow workshop safety procedures.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Participate in theoretical instruction.

  • Complete practical welding exercises.

  • Learn to handle welding equipment and consumables.

  • Complete the required course assessments.
