Our TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe) Operator Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and efficiently operate a TLB in construction, earthmoving, excavation, and general site operations. The training covers essential machine controls and functions, pre-operation inspections, loader and backhoe operation, excavation techniques, digging and loading procedures, material handling, machine stability, site preparation, safe manoeuvring, workplace hazards, and emergency procedures. Learners are guided on how to operate the equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, site requirements, operating limitations, and recognised workplace safety practices. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as construction, mining, civil engineering, roadworks, infrastructure development, agriculture, landscaping, earthmoving, and general plant operations.
Theory Training – 20%: Covers TLB fundamentals, machine components and controls, manufacturer specifications, pre-start inspections, loader and backhoe functions, operating capacities, excavation principles, load handling, machine stability, workplace safety, PPE, hazard identification, and emergency procedures.
Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in conducting pre-operation checks, starting and stopping the TLB, operating the front loader and backhoe, digging and excavating, loading and moving materials, trenching, backfilling, levelling, manoeuvring, and operating safely on different surfaces and terrain.
Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical TLB operation, excavation and loading techniques, machine control, manoeuvring, site awareness, safety practices, and ability to operate the equipment safely and effectively.
Machine Orientation: Learn what a TLB (Tractor-Loader-Backhoe) is, its functions and applications in excavation, earthmoving, construction, and material handling. Training covers the front loader, backhoe, bucket, boom, dipper arm, hydraulic system, stabilisers, operator controls, safety features, warning systems, and operating capacities according to manufacturer specifications.
Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to conduct comprehensive pre-start inspections, including checking tyres, brakes, steering, fluid levels, hydraulic systems, buckets, boom, dipper arm, stabilisers, controls, safety devices, and overall machine condition. Training also covers identifying and reporting faults and understanding the manufacturer’s operating manual.
Site Preparation & Work Planning: Learn how to assess and prepare the work area before operations begin. Training covers ground conditions, underground services, excavation areas, access routes, slopes, trenches, overhead hazards, pedestrian areas, safety signs, PPE, and exclusion zones.
Safe Operating Procedures: Learn essential PPE requirements, site safety procedures, hazard identification, machine stability, blind spots, pedestrian awareness, safe operation near excavations, uneven terrain, slopes, and emergency procedures.
Operating Procedures: Learn to operate TLB controls according to manufacturer specifications, including starting and stopping, steering, braking, forward and reverse movement, loader operation, backhoe operation, stabiliser controls, boom and dipper movement, bucket control, and safe manoeuvring.
Loader Operations: Develop skills in approaching, filling, lifting, carrying, and placing materials using the front loader. Training covers safe bucket positioning, load management, material handling, loading vehicles, and maintaining machine stability.
Backhoe & Excavation Operations: Learn safe excavation techniques including digging, trenching, bucket positioning, controlled excavation, spoil placement, backfilling, and working around underground services while maintaining safe distances from excavation edges.
Machine Stability & Worksite Hazards: Understand how load weight, bucket position, ground conditions, slopes, excavation edges, machine positioning, and stabiliser placement affect TLB stability. Training also covers avoiding overloading, tipping, and unsafe operating conditions.
Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown, parking, cleaning, inspection, and securing procedures, including lowering attachments, retracting and securing equipment, positioning stabilisers as required, reporting faults, and completing required workplace logs and documentation.
