Our Road Roller Operator Training Course is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to safely and efficiently operate a road roller in construction, roadworks, and earthmoving environments. The training covers essential machine operations, safety procedures, pre-start inspections, operating controls, compaction principles, vibration systems, rolling techniques, workplace hazards, machine stability, site preparation, and emergency procedures. Learners are guided on how to operate the equipment responsibly while following manufacturer specifications, site requirements, compaction procedures, and recognised workplace safety practices. The course provides valuable skills for individuals seeking opportunities in industries such as road construction, civil engineering, infrastructure development, earthmoving, mining, construction, asphalt works, and site preparation.

Theory Training – 20%: Covers road roller fundamentals, machine components and controls, manufacturer specifications, pre-start inspections, compaction principles, vibration systems, operating procedures, machine stability, site safety, PPE, hazard identification, ground conditions, pedestrian awareness, and emergency procedures.

Practical Training – 80%: Provides hands-on experience in conducting pre-operation checks, starting and stopping the road roller, operating steering and controls, selecting suitable compaction settings, compacting different surfaces, maintaining correct rolling patterns, working on slopes and uneven terrain, manoeuvring safely around obstacles, and operating effectively on construction and roadwork sites.

Competency Assessment: Learners are assessed on their theoretical knowledge, practical machine operation, compaction techniques, control of the road roller, site awareness, safety practices, and ability to operate the equipment safely and effectively.

Machine Orientation: Learn what a road roller is, its functions and applications in road construction and earthmoving activities, different types of rollers, and the main components and their functions. Training covers the drum, engine, hydraulic system, vibration system, operator controls, steering system, safety features, warning indicators, and operating capacities according to manufacturer specifications.

Pre-Operation Checks: Learn how to conduct pre-start inspections, including checking tyres or drums, brakes, steering, fluid levels, hydraulic systems, vibration components, engine condition, safety systems, warning devices, and overall machine condition. Learners are trained to identify and report faults before operation.

Site Preparation & Work Planning: Learn how to assess and prepare the work area before compaction activities. Training covers ground conditions, work surfaces, site access, slopes, obstacles, pedestrian areas, traffic routes, safety signs, PPE, and exclusion zones.

Safe Operating Procedures: Develop safe operating practices covering workplace hazards, machine stability, blind spots, pedestrian awareness, safe distances, operating near edges and slopes, weather conditions, uneven terrain, and emergency procedures.

Operating Procedures: Learn to operate road roller controls according to manufacturer specifications. Training covers starting and stopping, steering, braking, forward and reverse movement, speed control, drum operation, vibration controls, and safe manoeuvring.

Compaction Operations: Learn the principles of effective compaction, including rolling patterns, pass sequencing, vibration settings, travel speed, surface preparation, and achieving uniform compaction across different materials and surfaces.

Working on Different Surfaces: Learn safe operating procedures for compacting soil, gravel, asphalt, and other road construction surfaces, while considering ground conditions, slopes, moisture, surface stability, and machine movement.

Site Safety & Hazard Awareness: Learn to identify and control hazards such as unstable ground, steep slopes, edges, trenches, other machinery, pedestrians, restricted visibility, overhead obstructions, and changing site conditions.

Post-Operation Procedures: Learn correct shutdown and parking procedures, securing the road roller, cleaning and inspecting the machine, reporting faults, and completing required workplace inspection logs and operational documentation.
