It is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in developing welding skills for fabrication, construction, manufacturing and industrial maintenance.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.

Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Please Note: The PPE shown in the image is for illustration purposes only. Your PPE does not need to look exactly like the example shown. As long as you have the required PPE listed above, you are welcome to bring your own.

1. How much does CO2 welding training cost?
Our CO2 welding training costs R8,500 per person for the four-week programme. The course introduces learners to CO2 welding equipment, shielding gas, welding wire, metal preparation, welding techniques and workshop safety.

2. What is CO2 welding?
CO2 welding is a gas-shielded arc welding process that uses carbon dioxide as a shielding gas to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. It is commonly associated with MAG (Metal Active Gas) welding, which uses a continuously fed consumable wire electrode.

An electric arc forms between the wire electrode and the metal workpiece, generating heat that melts the base metal and welding wire to create a joint. The shielding gas protects the welding area during the process.

CO2 welding is commonly used in:

  • Structural steel fabrication.

  • Automotive manufacturing and repairs.

  • Construction and engineering.

  • Industrial equipment manufacturing.

  • Steel furniture and component production.

  • General metal fabrication and maintenance.

3. Is CO2 welding difficult to learn?
CO2 welding requires an understanding of wire feeding, gas flow, welding current and torch movement. Beginners need to learn how to maintain a consistent arc and control the welding process to produce sound welds.

Important skills include:

  • Setting up the welding machine correctly.

  • Selecting suitable welding wire.

  • Adjusting voltage and wire-feed speed.

  • Maintaining the correct torch angle and distance.

  • Controlling travel speed and weld bead formation.

  • Recognising common welding defects.

Understanding these fundamentals provides a foundation for developing CO2 welding skills.

4. What does a CO2 welding course cover?
The course introduces learners to the main equipment, materials and procedures used in CO2 welding. Key learning areas include:

  • CO2 welding principles and processes.

  • Welding machine components and operation.

  • Carbon dioxide shielding gas and its purpose.

  • Welding wire types and selection.

  • Wire-feed speed and voltage settings.

  • Metal preparation and cleaning.

  • Welding joints and joint preparation.

  • Torch positioning and travel speed.

  • Welding positions and bead formation.

  • Weld quality and common defects.

  • Workshop safety and protective equipment.

5. Why is carbon dioxide gas used in welding?
Carbon dioxide is used as a shielding gas to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination during welding. It is an active gas, meaning it participates in the welding process rather than behaving as an inert gas.

CO2 shielding gas is commonly used when welding carbon steel. It is relatively economical and provides good penetration, although it can produce more spatter than some argon-based gas mixtures.

Its main functions include:

  • Protecting the weld area from atmospheric contamination.

  • Supporting stable welding conditions.

  • Influencing weld penetration and bead characteristics.

  • Helping produce a sound weld when the correct settings and technique are used.

Some welding applications use pure CO2, while others use argon and CO2 mixtures. The appropriate gas depends on the material, welding procedure and required weld characteristics.

6. What equipment is used for CO2 welding?
CO2 welding uses specialised equipment that feeds welding wire continuously while supplying shielding gas to the welding area.

Common equipment includes:

  • MIG/MAG welding machine.

  • Welding torch and contact tip.

  • Wire-feed mechanism.

  • Welding wire and wire spool.

  • CO2 gas cylinder.

  • Gas regulator and flowmeter.

  • Welding cables and earth clamp.

  • Welding clamps and workholding equipment.

  • Wire brush and cleaning tools.

  • Welding helmet, gloves and protective clothing.

Correct machine settings, wire selection and gas flow are important for achieving consistent welding results.

7. What metals can be welded using CO2 welding?
CO2 welding is commonly used for carbon steel and other suitable steel materials. The welding process and shielding gas must be selected according to the material and application.

Common applications include:

  • Mild steel: Used in general fabrication, furniture, gates and structural components.

  • Carbon steel: Used in construction, engineering and industrial equipment.

  • Low-alloy steel: Used in selected manufacturing and structural applications.

Pure CO2 is particularly common in carbon steel welding. Stainless steel and other specialised materials generally require suitable shielding gas mixtures and specific welding procedures.

8. What are the common challenges in CO2 welding?
CO2 welding requires proper machine settings, material preparation and control of the welding process. Common problems include:

  • Excessive spatter: Incorrect voltage, wire-feed speed or welding technique can cause molten metal to scatter around the weld.

  • Porosity: Gas pockets can form because of contamination or inadequate shielding gas protection.

  • Lack of fusion: Incorrect settings or poor torch movement can prevent proper joining of the materials.

  • Undercut: Excessive heat or unsuitable travel speed can create grooves along the weld edges.

  • Burn-through: Excessive heat can damage thin metal sections.

  • Inconsistent weld beads: Incorrect torch angle, travel speed or wire-feed settings can affect weld appearance and quality.

Understanding these problems helps learners recognise the importance of correct equipment settings, clean materials and consistent welding technique.

9. Where can a CO2 welder work?
CO2 welding is widely used in industries that manufacture, assemble and repair steel products and structures.

Work environments include:

  • Steel fabrication workshops.

  • Automotive manufacturing and repair businesses.

  • Construction and engineering companies.

  • Manufacturing plants.

  • Industrial maintenance workshops.

  • Agricultural equipment manufacturers.

  • Metal furniture and component manufacturers.

  • General welding and fabrication businesses.

10. What career opportunities are available after CO2 welding training?
CO2 welding knowledge provides a foundation for individuals interested in developing skills in welding, steel fabrication and manufacturing.

Potential job opportunities include:

  • CO2 welding assistant.

  • Welding assistant.

  • Junior welder.

  • Metal fabrication worker.

  • Steel fabrication assistant.

  • Workshop assistant.

  • Manufacturing and assembly worker.

  • Industrial maintenance assistant.

Further welding experience and specialised training can help learners develop their skills and progress into more advanced welding applications.

11. Can I get a CO2 welding certificate after training?
Yes. Learners who successfully complete the required course assessments receive a training certificate confirming completion of the CO2 welding programme. The certificate can be included in a CV when applying for opportunities in welding, fabrication, construction and manufacturing.

12. What are the requirements for CO2 welding training?
The course is suitable for beginners and individuals interested in learning gas-shielded welding techniques. Previous welding experience is useful but is not essential for understanding the introductory principles.

Learners should be prepared to:

  • Follow workshop instructions and safety procedures.

  • Understand basic measurements.

  • Learn how to operate welding equipment.

  • Handle welding wire and consumables correctly.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

  • Participate in the required learning and assessment activities.
