Our Double Coded Welding Training Course is designed to develop advanced welding skills for learners who want to work across more than one recognised welding process or qualification area. Training focuses on safe welding practices, equipment setup, material preparation, welding positions, joint types, process selection, weld quality, and defect prevention. Learners gain practical experience applying different welding techniques under professional supervision, helping them develop the versatility required for fabrication, construction, engineering, manufacturing, mining, and industrial environments.
Theory Training – 20%: The theory component of the Double Coded Welding course provides learners with knowledge of two welding processes, including welding principles, equipment and machine functions, material identification, electrode and filler selection, welding settings, joint types, welding positions, safety procedures, and weld quality requirements.
Practical Training – 80%: The practical component provides extensive hands-on workshop experience in both selected welding processes. Learners practise equipment setup, material preparation, welding techniques, different welding positions and joint configurations, controlling welding parameters, and producing quality welds under professional supervision.
Competency Assessment: Learners undergo a competency assessment conducted by qualified assessors and moderators. The assessment evaluates their knowledge and practical ability across both welding processes, including equipment handling, safety awareness, welding technique, weld quality, and their ability to complete welding tasks safely and competently.
Introduction to Welding Codes & Standards: Understanding recognised welding standards such as AWS, ASME Section IX, and ISO, along with coded welding requirements, workplace safety, PPE, welding theory, arc characteristics, metal transfer, and electrode selection.
Welding Equipment Setup: Setting up and operating SMAW, TIG, and MIG/MAG welding equipment, selecting suitable electrodes such as E6013 and E7018, choosing appropriate shielding gases, and adjusting welding parameters according to the material and welding process.
Plate Welding (1G–4G): Developing practical skills in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding positions. Training includes butt and fillet joints, multiple-pass welding, heat control, and producing welds that meet required quality standards.
Pipe Welding (5G & 6G): Training covers pipe preparation and fit-up, root passes, hot passes, and cap passes, along with welding techniques for fixed pipe positions. Learners also develop skills in identifying common weld defects and applying appropriate corrections.
Welder Performance Qualification: Learners complete practical welding exercises under controlled testing conditions to demonstrate their ability to produce consistent, quality welds. Training includes test plate and pipe preparation, visual inspection, defect identification, and an introduction to non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.
