Our CO₂ Welding Training Course provides hands-on practical training in using a continuous wire electrode and shielding gas delivered through a welding gun to join and fuse metal components. Learners develop essential skills in machine setup, wire selection, gas flow, welding techniques, material preparation, joint formation, and weld quality control while following safe welding practices. The course is designed to build practical confidence for work in fabrication, construction, manufacturing, engineering, and industrial environments.
Theory Training – 20%: The theory component covers the fundamentals of CO₂ welding, including welding principles, equipment and machine functions, wire electrodes, shielding gas, welding safety, PPE, material preparation, welding settings, joint types, and common welding defects.
Practical Training – 80%: The practical component provides hands-on workshop experience where learners practise setting up CO₂ welding equipment, selecting and feeding the correct wire, adjusting gas flow and welding settings, preparing materials, controlling the welding gun, producing consistent welds, and working with different joints and welding positions under professional supervision.
Competency Assessment: At the end of the training, learners undergo a competency assessment conducted by qualified assessors and moderators. The assessment evaluates their theoretical knowledge, practical welding ability, equipment handling, safety awareness, and ability to complete CO₂ welding tasks safely and competently.
Introduction to MIG/CO₂ Welding: Understanding the fundamentals of MIG/CO₂ welding, how continuous wire electrodes and shielding gas are used, and the basic principles of joining different metals.
Workplace Health & Safety: Learning correct PPE requirements, hazard identification, ventilation, fire prevention, electrical safety, safe gas-cylinder handling, and proper workshop procedures.
Welding Machine Setup & Controls: Setting up MIG/CO₂ welding machines, connecting equipment correctly, adjusting machine controls, and carrying out equipment inspections before and after use.
Electrode & Shielding Gas Selection: Understanding continuous wire electrodes, selecting suitable wire sizes and shielding gases, and adjusting gas pressure and flow for different welding applications.
Metal Identification & Preparation: Identifying materials such as mild steel and stainless steel, preparing surfaces through cutting, grinding, cleaning, and ensuring materials are ready for welding.
Joint Types & Welding Positions: Practising T-joints, butt joints, and fillet welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
Welding Techniques: Developing skills in wire feeding, gun control, travel speed, heat management, and welding both thin and thicker metal sections.
Welding Defects & Repairs: Identifying common welding problems such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, and inconsistent welds, while learning basic troubleshooting and corrective techniques.
Quality Inspection & Standards: Learning to visually inspect completed welds, identify quality issues, and understand basic welding quality and certification requirements.
Final Practical Assessment: Completing a supervised fabrication and welding project that allows learners to demonstrate their equipment setup, welding techniques, safety practices, and ability to produce quality welds.
Block Production Process: Introduction to basic production workflows, including preparing materials, following measurements and specifications, welding components consistently, inspecting completed work, and maintaining an organised and safe work area.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You can either bring your own PPE for training or purchase it from the college for an additional R1,000.
Required PPE: Overall, Safety Helmet, Gloves, Safety Boots.

Oxy-Acetylene Gas Welding Training

Our Oxy-Acetylene Gas Welding Training Course provides learners with practical knowledge and hands-on skills in using oxygen and acetylene gases to heat, cut, braze, and join metal components. Training covers equipment setup, gas-cylinder and regulator handling, flame adjustment, metal preparation, welding techniques, joint types, cutting procedures, brazing, workplace safety, and basic weld inspection. Learners gain practical experience working with different metals while developing the skills required for fabrication, maintenance, construction, engineering, and workshop environments.
Introduction to Gas Welding: Understanding the fundamentals of gas welding, how oxy-acetylene welding works, common welding gases, and the main advantages and limitations of gas welding.
Welding Safety & PPE: Learning essential PPE requirements, safe cylinder handling and storage, fire prevention, emergency procedures, ventilation, and workplace safety practices.
Tools, Equipment & Setup: Identifying gas cylinders, regulators, flashback arrestors, welding torch components, hoses, and nozzles. Learners also practise safe equipment setup, nozzle maintenance, lighting, and shutdown procedures.
Gas Welding Techniques: Understanding neutral, oxidising, and carburising flames, tack welding, forehand and backhand techniques, and methods for joining mild steel and thin metal sheets.
Gas Cutting Skills: Learning the principles of oxy-fuel cutting, cutting thin and thick metals, piercing, edge cutting, straight-line cutting, and identifying and correcting common cutting defects.
Practical Welding Exercises: Developing hands-on skills through butt, lap, T-joint, and corner welds, as well as cutting exercises on different materials.
Brazing & Soldering: Introduction to brazing and soldering techniques, including joining mild steel and copper, selecting suitable materials, preparing surfaces, applying heat correctly, and producing secure joints.
